The History of my Name (part one)

by Kathleen Wilson

in the theater
"Smilin' Through"

my dad is "Ken"
(romantic lead)

my mom sews the curtain
sets the scene

he catches her big
brown eyes

follows her after
taps his cane

who is it
(his name was Ed)

"Kenneth Wayne"
she smiles

when can I see you
his classic query

tomorrow
early mass

I go
every day

and so from then
she called him only "Ken"

what shall we call her
(he was my idol)

remember the play
now the movie

let's call her
"our Kathleen"
