Can't Sleep

by Harold Millican

I woke up this morning
Losing sleep over
A Tick
The fact that who I love makes my sister
SICK!
It unsettles me that she would rather I change
It pains me that she prays for the day that I’ll be searchin'
For the SAVING that Donnie Mcclurkin found

For a moment
I sat there
Riding in her car without a sound
Trying to piece together the reasoning behind
Why she could be so damn BLIND
She remarked it must be really hard to fight my big TEMPTATION
And she expressed her elation for not having to be in my SITUATION
And when we left B&N,
I chose to defend

That gay man that I didn’t know
Because she was laughing like a fiend
“Oh, now HE’S GAY, I mean”
But someone like you throws a person off, she said.
Oh God!
Someone shoot me in the head
Tell me why her eyes can’t see the PAIN she inflicts
When she speaks
She said there’s no genetic disposition
And I’m on a mission,
Maybe you can turn it OFF...
No one WANTS to be GAY!
And that utterance did remind me of The Family Stone.
In the end
I refuse to
HATE MYSELF
Because in light of what she said
If I took it to heart, I’d be dead
