Life is easy

by Jolie Jordan

my mother is fifty-four and
expecting her first grandbaby

we sit around and laugh about the past
eating sliced cheese and broccoli with dip.

I hug her in the kitchen
she's swallowed up in my arms;
I think about being four
and everything the other way around.
