12/24/2007 Author's Note: Published,(haiku only) "Under the Banana Tree", Haiku and tanka from the Leaugue of Laboring Poets, Summer, 2008. Also included in "above the tree line" Southern California Haiku Study Group, 2008 Anthology.
This is #4 of 60 original arworks, and haikus following an old tradition from Japan by sending a New Year's greeting card called a Nengajyou [or nengaj] to haiku friends who signed up to participate. Most participants use a purchased postcard or one they have desiged, Somewhere on the card, is to be included the jyunishi (zodiac sign) for 2008 (the year of the rat) and the words *Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu* (Happy New Year). I decided to make each one by hand, and to write an original haiku in response to the one sent by the other poet.
