Author's Note: I am participating in this creative following of an old tradition from Japan by sending a New Year's greeting card called a Nengajyou [or nengajô] to haiku friends who signed up to participate.(2008 is the "year of the rat". One can use a purchased postcard – or one you design yourself. Somewhere on the card, if you can, include the jyunishi (zodiac sign) for 2008 (the year of the rat) and the words *Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu* (Happy New Year). Then one adds a new year’s haiku that you have written, and send a postcard to each participant whose snail mail address.(15 different countries are represented) I am making a handmade card and a different haiku in specific respsonse to each I receive this is #1 of 60. That means I will write 60 haiku! (I may be late for New Years, but each person will get a special art work with a personal poem)

This is excellent. I have a friend who married a Japanese school teacher and will now have to write her a personal Haiku for the "year of the rat".

This is such a wonderful display of your artistic spirit. Is it too late to sign up? I would adore having a handmade Kathy Ku! I would even track down my watercolor kit and find my sketch pad to send you one in return. I've only painted frogs and such but I'd give my best shot at a rat...
