Merry Christmas Nanny ( a children's ballad)

by Don Matley

Each season they travelled to Nanny’s house
To celebrate that wondrous time of the year;
When no one was stirring not even a mouse,
When stockings were filled like glasses of cheer.

And though on her own and many miles away,
Always a smile to greet young and old;
Always a toy, a candy, or a game to play
And always a new adventure never before told.

And even as all the children got older each year
They never lost their desire to always be there;
Though a question hung on their lips, not asked out of fear,
Until one year the oldest decided to dare.

To dare ask the question so simple to sound
As to why every year Nanny still had a smile,
Even though getting older and slower at getting around,
Yet still cooking and serving and laughing the while.

Now the oldest was Garth who indeed was so bold
As to ask the “why” question of our lady so kind;
“Now sit down all my children and it will be told
How it is that I always smile, I really don’t mind.”

“The question is a good one from curious youth
who someday like me, will have to smile or frown
When aches and pains try to hide the truth,
And make it hard for us not to feel down.”

“The truth dear Garth, Jordan and Trent
Is that Love is the medicine that keeps me bound.
It is Love given, returned and well-spent
That keeps me together with both feet on the ground.”

“And it is children like you who come for a visit
And put down Nintendo and hockey for a day,
To spend time with me and and to see that I’m fit
To get through another week, with aches and pains, but that’s OK.”

“But Nanny”, the youngest one said, with a cheer,
“We come to see you because you are who you are;
We don’t miss Nintendo, hockey, or new toys so dear,
We just really want to, and your house never seems far!”

“But that’s the point, my children, so soon to grow old,
My aches and pains, and your travels, leaving your toys – all seem not so bad,
When Love is the force that moves our souls,
When Love is the medicine that keeps us glad.”

“Thanks for answering our question”, said little Trent,
“I really think I get it – this thing called Love;
It really is something special, kind of heavenly sent,
Sort of like all the twinkling stars in the night above.”

And then all the children spoke as one:
“Tonight when we skate on our rink in the back,
We’ll stare at the stars so bright in the sky,
And we’ll smile when we think of our Nanny and her answer to “why”.”

Lovely, sentimental piece. Great rhyme and rythm.
