Home

there's nothing in the water

by Nanette Bellman

In every checkout line,
to the left and the right of me,
Are magazines
Plastered with Britney Spears face
and how she's pregnant
With an illegitimate lovechild
of someone's, who knows?
But they say the third time a charm
So when they take baby #3 away
Maybe she'll get her shit together

And in front of and behind me
In the same checkout line
Are girls, with bulging bellies of new life,
still wet behind the ears,
who hung their every hope
on the promises
of a future dead beat dad,
buying their milk and juice
and let's not forget the cheese

And here I stand
with a cart of cat food and Diet Pepsi
as well as other things I don't need
pondering if I don't drink the same
or don't drink enough
because I've heard it's in the water lately.

You do best in this format I think. This was stellar. *One complaint, drink Coke Zero. No Pepsi Please. :)
