half a chance

by Alisa Js

if you were half the man you pretended to be
we wouldn't find ourselves here at this place at this time,
with no turning back, no side stepping
no future, no laughter, no us ...

if you were as sensitive as you led me to believe
you'd know without a doubt, I'd been hurt, too
just like you,
along with the rest of this misbegotten world
along with the best of humanity
but that's life
and we're all here, like it or not
for whatever that's worth
and at this juncture, apparently not much ...

if I were half the woman I needed to be
I would have made it quite clear, I'm not into pity
or patronizing fears
I've swam in them far too long
and we would have found a way, somehow
to get through the bullshit, ever threatening
and maybe, just maybe
we would have stood half a chance
we'll never know now
moot point, well taken...

but that's what we've got
this heartache and strain
gut churning sadness absorbs everything
turned my world this twisted shade of
nothing matters much
life is a crap-shoot
winners are screwed
losers gain in the end
or was it the other way 'round ...
