such a deal

by Mary Frances Spencer

on sale
corruption
every day offering
violence
such a deal

and the flat-screen
plasma eyes
empty

while
money-grubbing
fingers
hover over
the remote
code red

blue-light
specials
online auctions
free shipping
included

a smiley face
flips down
the dollar
and red white blue
drapes
the hidden
coffers

war
fattens few
while we
numb and
frenzied

shop
for gifts
we do not
need

Author's Note: Is anyone else feeling this crazy frenzy of shopping as some form of pacification? MFS

For sure. Working in the retail industry, I could not agree with this more. I witness it every day... I am extremely anti-consumerist, yet I work in the worst possible job for someone of my views. How ironic. But yeah, shopping is definitely just a way to make people feel better about themselves, their lives, and make them feel like they are doing good for others, while they put themselves deeper in debt doing it. It is all about the money, sadly. Like you said, pacification. Exactly. Good piece!
