the phoenix

by Ymelda Ramirez

you, i’ve known for a heartbeat.
you breathe in my soul
and push me away with each exhale.
you keep all of my emotions at your fingertips
and let them dangle over the flames of your desires.
i hold on to those glimpses of reality,
feeling that finally you’ve let me in.
expectations lead me to feel the heat of your betrayal,
while my soul burns in the purgatory of my own madness.
i seek your acceptance
only to fail miserably.
i’ll gather my ashes,
regain my strength,
WITHOUT YOU .
we’ll meet again and when we do,
i’ll lay it all out for you.
and once again,
you’ll hold my heart.

Those last four lines are stunning. Great mix of sadness and anger.
