a pathetic toast to the new year

by Maria Francesca

You're supposed to kiss someone
on New Year's Eve -
a tradition in which we all believe

Just in case
the mistletoe didn't work,
the countdown leads
to a chance for us jerks
who've endured the last months
unpursued and ungroped

with a glass of champagne
and a heart full of hope
that things
will be different this coming year
if we only begin it lipstick smeared;

Not a one of us wants
to be the drudge
in the corner
unkissed
and unmussed
and unsmudged

so here's to the bottle
and here's to the booze
and to low-cut black dresses
and high-heeled shoes -

May the New Year bring change
and a prayer it won't find
my sad self in a corner
kissin' Auld Lang's behind.

I can relate, and even though I'm presently "in a relationship", we don't have the sort of connection that....wait. I don't know that yet, this will be our first New Year's Eve together. So I'll have to get back to you and let you know if it's any better on THIS side of the relationship line. Hehe.
