"A Word to the Wise?"

by Max Phineas

Sometimes I hear
that age brings knowledge and
Prolific wisdom, to boot.

And I don't think
my folks are dumb,
for they are quite astute.

But sometimes
One much older makes
a statement so obtuse

I tend to think
That common sense
Is out and on the loose.

Some words are said,
Pass through my head
I wonder who's sunk so low,

When, mercy me,
I look and see
A man, with kids in tow.

The ignorance,
Oblivion,
and thoughtless psychobabble

May one day be
Too much for me
And I just may unravel.

So let me pray
My soul absorbs
A wisdom so profound

That when I speak
My words are pure
And their essences resound.

cute poem. it reads lightly and fun spirited, but the message is quite heavy. growing old does not mean growing cynical. but it's an easy trap to fall into. i hope you can avoid it.

I love the rhythm and rhyme scheme of this. Sometimes rhyming is too forced, but this one not at all - very refreshing in form and structure. As for the message, I think if I could say one thing to younger generations, it would be to listen with an open heart (it's something I try hard to remember as well, at my age). It's always good for the soul to gather information without filters, but as we get older, the filters of experience tend to build up, and it becomes more and more challenging to let information through purely, without the effect of previous experience. I'm glad I was reminded by your wise observations! Thank you!

I love the rhyme and flow of this. Life would be boring if there was nothing else to learn.
