In this April sun by Carissa DeweyIn this April sun
on this Saturday
he sits thinking of his
recent heartache,
how he soaked
those calluses
the night before
and how his sour hangover mocks him.
He studies the
Purple Martins as they beat
at the air like bats,
he describes their nature
in precise detail.
Then in the usual silence
drunk with fatigue
he stretches his body
carefully
at the resting waters earthy frame,
while she is there shyly
jotting down
images that surround.
He deliberately looks away from
her and her hand,
and notices
a colony of cat tails dried in a hard dusty yellow
standing stiff-
an iron fence
against the pulsating wind,
and the naked young spruce
dipping its scarlet branches
tempting the fish-
made soft as they swing in the silt.
He glances back
at her and her hand,
she is watching the insects
as they create hiccups on the face
of this dark pond.
He mentions his pastels
she returns a dry smile,
sitting up he reaches and
retrieves a cigarette.
Although he will probably
take her back to his room,
to his bed-
kiss her with his eyes closed
and turn her over,
she knows that
like his silence,
like the fish
she always will remain
unclear to him.

Posted by Steven Kenworthy on 11/26/07 at 05:11 PM wow...this is some serious imagery...under one seriously foggy scenario. this poem is ultimately sad, but done in a strange almost romantic way with the fashion in which you included the detailed nature and confusion of love/understanfing. i didn't know what to expect...but this poem i think is extremely strong and one many of us can easily relate to. most excellent carissa.... |
Posted by Michelle Angelini on 11/26/07 at 05:17 PM WOW! shivers run up my spine as I immerse myself into your imagery. It has an air of mystery, while being very definitive. Your perspective is omniscient, yet has all the emotion the reader needs to identify with either he or she. Yep, I'm addicted...more, please?
