To Receive Thanks by Jeffrey ParrenI waited on a lady today
encoated with diamonds
so plentiful it seemed
that a mere one
could rid me of my debt.
Though I did not know it,
I was making her holiday
something to remember
but for a positive reason,
even with my frantic hustle.
She emparted her story
upon me after her thanks,
that she was in the middle
of a divorce and this trip
was to take her mind away.
It was rather haulting,
her honesty, in a moment
of weakness she cried
some tears while the
grandchildren were gone.
She seemed lost
and yet in control
as I patted her on the back
and she regained form
as if nothing happened.
On her way to Radio CIty
with her Son and his two,
to enjoy family fun
to forget her own problems;
a family upon separation.11/22/2007 Author's Note: It is moments like these that allow me to remember that being nice is ok. Being a caring waiter is good too. In the hustle that is NYC, I find these moments to be few and far between, but very grounding.

Posted by Gabriel Ricard on 11/23/07 at 05:27 AM I suppose that's why they're grounding to begin with. Great work. |
