Susan on the Shore

by Steven Craig

Yesterday
you were just digging your toes in the sand
chasing minnows
watching the seabirds

A sweetheart chasing minnows
You like the bay
and the creeks
and the rivulets
and the sands
and the bushes
and the trees
and the soaring birds
and the drifting clouds
and the shadows cast down the lane
and you walk slowly
so that you can remember everything in detail
should you never walk there again

Sometimes
cliffs can be seen
when the air is clear
and the waves stay quiet
to carry the gulls cry

New days bring new tides
and wash the care away
with old memories discarded
not needed any more
there are mornings
when the water is like glass
You watch a heron glide
silently
like a ghost over the still waters
and you find peace
in that moment

There are stars in the late afternoon
and an early sun each morning
And when you look at the window pane
you see the smile that you have each day
for everyone you care for
Not for a waving hand to bid farewell
not for a note left at night
not for a breeze that slowly retreats
you stay
anchored
happy
forever you

Your words say all that needs be said. A wonderful poem.
