Dark Bird in Flight: 2. questions (with Kathleen Wilson)

by David Garner

not mine but blue beak of dream so open
above our heads you cannot see beginning or end
imagine it enormous outside the frame
we float in its open mouthed hunger
all my poise and stare at you cannot hide
that I am swallowed in it put your head into deep
blueness beside mine touch my hair it is all wing

I want to trust your blueness blue inviter but
what earthly chokes and swallows
I possess I see outside the frame
with our best wingspans
but I convinced of civil battles am earthbound
I lessen with your determination and salute you
your strength does not become my weakness frail I go

Author's Note: This is part two of collaboration.
For part one, look at Kathleen's posting of Dark Bird in Flight.
italic stanzas are Kathleen's followed by mine, alternating throughout. More to come. I invited Kathleen Wilson to collaborate on a poem. We began and have written with such swift intensity that we are posting the collab as it develops. The entire poem is inspired by a painting I suggested, and we will reveal that later.

This vivid poem is very descriptive, yet I am curious to see the picture. Lately, I've been inspired by artworks in my poetry. These word paintings float me in the air, but keep me aware of other emotions I must feel. Is the bird this multi-emotional in the painting, too? Maybe...

anything written with kathleen wilson can't be at all bad and you didn't disappoint here. this is intensely beautiful and loaded with saturating imagery. love the civil battles reference...struggle and checked honesty are extremely interesting in poetry. great great write. ---sk

This was the amazing beginning. When you suggested a collaboration I knew it would be a good one because I already loved your poetry. But this went beyond my expectations immediately. The intensity of natural exchange, the balances, the meeting of minds "outside the frame" "with our best wingspans" and at the same time "earthbound". Excellent language and immediately each of your stanzas set off an immediate fiery response in me. What could be better in a collaboration!
