gene pool

by Mary Frances Spencer

when that clock
ticks biological
the gene pool
opens another lane
or two

familiar faces
personality traces
shape shifters
same eyes different colors
wide open underwater
they lap

and surface

the mirage of the precious
glimmers of hope
splash over the horizon
like jewels
sparkling new trails
in the thirsty desert
of time

I love the "pool" imagery and the link from "gene" to swimming (so appropriate even from the beginning before birth). The "mirage", desert sand the "sparkling" "trails"--all colorful and like rainbows of "hope"-- a gem.

This evolving piece gives root to a tree of metaphors, Mary Frances. Very stylish and reflective stuff!
