A Few Poets

by Joe Cramer

I have kissed a few poets in my time,

Listened to several more than many,

And read the works of more than I could

Ever imagine in my wildest dreams to tell you.

I've licked my lips in sweet anticipation

Of more poetic word, thought, deed.

Now if I would only heed the avarice

And do something with my own words.

My succulent, sweet kisses are far too few,

Though I would but kiss, into

The long, lonely night until

I thought that I was satiated.

I have known a few poets in my life

Never, not ever taking one for a wife.

Perhaps that is the reason for my malaise

These days, or indeed,  perhaps not.

I constantly read the works of famous poets

All of the time in my futile attempts

To teach poetry to the young.

I guess that I should just continue

All of the above, though I'd rather

Passionately kiss a few more poets.

I am remiss.
