tragedy

by Gira Bryant

it was a crash landing

(did you remember to
wear your seat belt?)

after the strangely
unruffled turbulence
of freefall

(do you remember how tightly
I clenched your hand?)

it was a huge
shuddering jolt
that jerked us all

(do you remember
that thunderstorm?)

forward and then
back, whiplash

(do you remember how
we kissed as if the world was ending?)

and the screech
of mangled steel

(do you remember how
our eyes shone in the twilight?)

as the cabin
was rendered viciously in two

(do you remember
how we meant to be happy?)
