a poison

by David Garner

a poison came in you again
why do you react so harshly?

like when you cried
don’t do this to me
or running out on me in that restaurant

now you leave incoherent messages on my machine
and e-mail me strange words that aren’t even thoughts yet?

a poison came in you again
why do you react so harshly?

the halting feeling of this well amplifies the context. "poison came in you again" is a very interesting way of putting this, it seems to take away the guilt--in that it has come rather than being created in and by the person. Also "come in you" can mean -in the person of you" to me... so it speaks of the effect on you too. yes.. "harshly"--and the restaurant episode gives an immediacy. sad.
