laughing nickels, crying pennies by Charlie Morgana hard-working man counts
pennies of need and comfort;
jingling the dirty change home,
his shortcomings happily follow.
X-ing one more day off
his minute by minute
calendar of life,
wondering: tomorrow?
kids, extract payments due
for their entry into teenhood,
a lonely place filled by acne
and broken hearts of teen-love.
a bookbag sticker says: whatever.
whatever a watchword of Gen X.
his goal: an uttered "never";
the last word yelled as he slinks.

Posted by A. Paige White on 11/09/07 at 04:04 PM Oh this is sooooo good Chaz! Wow! You X'd the spot. I've got a passle of teens in my life and this poem so marks the spot. My goodness... I love them all so much. They bring LIFE into my heart and home. Love this. Favorites bound.
Posted by Alison McKenzie on 11/09/07 at 05:14 PM God, I SO get it!!! (Having, as Paige does, a "house-full" of teens - mine and others - my home is the "hang out" at times). Gen X and whatever indeed!!! How they will claim their identities in what we've done to the world is beyond my very limited and jaded perspective. One thing is certain. Soon we will be the elders they are caring (or not caring) for and how will we fare in their grip?
Posted by Genevieve Sturrock on 11/09/07 at 05:30 PM yikers! mine are just heading into teendom. scary, man. i'm still way too cognizant of my own teen years.
Posted by Joan Serratelli on 03/01/09 at 09:59 PM Teenagers should ALL go off to teennagerland- raised 3 girls- they all gave me headaches (and heartaches). Thank G-d they grow up!Great write. Every parent of a teen should print it out and put it on the fridge.
