A Promise Made

by Genevieve Sturrock

i do not engage
in double talk
hidden messages
or secret agendas
so be careful
not to read
too deeply
searching for
meaning that
just isn't there

promises made
with no thought
to consequence
are often the
cause of
inner turmoil

but a promise made
with sincerity
and eyes wide open
frees the heart
and soothes the
conflicted soul

i stand in my life
with my arms
flung wide
head back
embracing it all

honesty is not
an easy road
but it is
worthy of the
struggle

and i live by
a promise made
with no regrets
or backward glances
for i know where
i have been
and it is to
the future
that i look

This strikes with such strength and determination. I could use a slice right now. :-)

Honesty is not an easy road and to be honest with oneself even harder but you seem to have taken the introspective journey and come out of it with clarity and veracity. Bravo. smh

I love how coloquial and simply stated this is, the layout really adds to that feel...a poignant topic, delicately handled...well done, peace, jewels

Oh how completely refrreshing to hear this and to know it completely. Perfectly expressed, honesty is better than any gift on this earth. I love this poem. —Jill

With honesty and sincerity, there can be no regret. I love your attitude of "what you see is what you get" Thanks for this very honest write!

No mistaking anything here. Clear and to the point. And so nicely done!
