depth of tears

by Mary Frances Spencer

i am trying
to guess
why
your silence
echoes so
a pebble
bounces against the sides
as it falls down
that well
deeper than dark
no splash in
the oil
floating on the years
there is no sound
in depth
of
tears

a beautifully dark thick feeling to this. I love the expression "depth of tears". And that there is oil (a surprise) so no "splash" from the "pebble" sent down to sound the "years" the rhyme is satisfying at the end, and subtle.

The allegory between the well and tears also shows the depth of emotion that exists in sadness and when communication fails.
