Daisy May Pink

by A. Paige White

I saw her step sprightly through the double doors
of the National Guard armory
and knew myself targeted
the moment her surprisingly strong
grip cemented itself around my arm
just above the elbow.
She had made a beeline for me
totally ignoring the graying gentleman behind me and
followed by a slightly less washed out version of herself
using a cane to pull one sleepy leg.
Her bright pink jogging suit was a vivacious warning
of things to come and cast a pinkish light on her thinning white hair
that spoke of many an hour gossiping at the local salon.
"Is this where I'm supposed to vote?" with a mischievous grin
that dared me to ask aloud whether her question was a serious inquiry
or just an icebreaker for the inevitable filibuster to her
captive vote seeking audience. When it was followed immediately by
her daughter's aghast "Oh Mama! You are so crazy!" My heartfelt smile hitched a sigh and I knew this would be an interesting distraction from the long wait in line, an inescapable fact for all the last minute voters.

Paige, what a wonderful character sketch. I'd love to hear some of her filibuster as you waited in line. The daughter's comment balanced this out perfectly!
