Unconditional Love

by Harold Millican

Have you ever stopped and thought about what that really means?

You say that you love someone
No matter what happens, now matter how they lean
And with time you seem to think that no matter what you do,
That person will ALWAYS love you

But then the problem arises and then you find
HORRIBLE surprises
You come to find that the love you so wanted to be true
Was somehow professed in vain
One decision to hate you made them take what they said
Back again

They disown you and say,
"I hate you!" "You don't belong to us!"
You're a disgrace they fuss

The people who you grew to trust and depend on
They suddenly become just a name and a face
In your mental Rolodex
Forever gone

You are now alone because you THOUGHT they loved you
You find that for your happiness, there is a price
Losing your loved one
Probably to you, the biggest sacrifice

This unconditional love you thought was there
Doesn't exist!
But then again, who knew?

I like that last line. Well said, and definitely a thought I've entertained a few times myself. Nicely done.
