October

by Jane E Pearce

Thanks for visiting again-

and for the long walks

on crisp leaves you have painted,

we speak of other years-

the smell of apples in the dorm,

pages of my notebook

starting to fill in, bonfires

and football games ,

 finally getting over  homesickness,

the first train trip home

with the familiar moving slowly

past until a sudden stop, and we

stepped back on the soft forgiving

ground of childhood.

.

I always loved you-

you gave me a fresh start

every year with your red and yellow

banners  trying to cling

to the trees, urging me

to go forward with my life.

.

We took you on our honeymoon-

you were the quiet guest that softly

sang a love song in the back seat

as skyline drive waved us

over the mountain of  your art.

.

After all the years, I still love you-

especially this year  when you were

here in the haven I  missed so- you

were here to welcome me home.

God bless your hours you share

with me- October, my love.
