burning

by Gira Bryant

I throw myself upon the pyre of love
Again, again, again and again
The flames leap upon my skin,
Burning, scorching, consuming, taking

Yet still - broken, bruised, with missing parts
I rise and rise again

I throw myself there because it is
The only life worth living
My compulsion to become overcomes
All thought of self-preservation

That which is burned truly away
Sacrificed to fire
Was never really me to begin with.
I am burned more pure that I may
Be fully me, fully myself
Only myself.
