Growing Up Behind by Genevieve Sturrockoh my darlings
you have been
taught that
your desires
are all that matter
but do you
not know
how your actions
affect those
around you
can you not
see the tears
or hear the sighs
or feel the
loneliness
that has
manifested
in your
absence
you both
shine so brightly
have you blinded
your own eyes
to those others
who love you
he reaches
for you
but his
arms are
not long
enough
all it
would take
is a shift
of your hand
to make contact
can you not
slow your pace
just a bit
turn your head
a fraction
to the side
he's there
in your shadow
looking up
to you
can you not see? 10/26/2007 Author's Note: my littlest misses his older brother and sister and they don't even seem to care

| Posted by Sigurdur Haraldsson on 10/27/07 at 10:41 PM I agree. From the start it sucks you in. First I thought it was a love poem but it turns out to be family love. You feel for the littlest one so much it hurts.
I love the lines:
you both
shine so brightly
have you blinded
your own eyes
to those others
who love you |
