sor-ridi

by Maria Massarella

Inscribed in a mother's
glance un mezzo sorriso

interposes a son's incitation
captured in a click mid-
doorway swallowing silent the

retro-taste of another day over
s-light shadow of goodbye fringes
a 'buona notte' that is

no more made of tucking him
in or late nightspeak embrace

yet there in the limen of his
'non lasciarmi mai' breathe
remnants of the succumbed when

his was the quiver of possible loss
hers the duel with cancer
eye to knowing eye acknowledge

in vital blink how this Now be
cherished - precious

Author's Note: in italian 'sorridi!' is 'smile!' -
'ridi' is 'laugh' - hence the wordplay in the title -
'mezzo sorriso' would be a 'semi-smile'
'buona notte' is simply 'good night'
'non lasciarmi mai' is 'don't ever leave me'

Lovely wordplay, you with your dual dance languages can do something others can't, weaving dance steps from one to two. Sweet interplay and I see his little face and smile glimmering through this as in your journal. I looked up words, just to be sure, and the danced delightfully for me. The ovetones of threat to this Now are felt, and your reaction -- so true so dear...yes, this moment now--be there! True for every one... and your poems a "vital blink" to us all.
