Mine

by Gira Bryant

like dogs
pissing on fire hydrants
to mark their territory

sometimes the fuzzy step
from owning to Owning
backhands you sharply
across the cheekbone

Property. Ownership. Mine.

Unequivocal. Irrevocable.

Final.

Primal.

Sometimes these things
sneak up on you
hit you over the head
with your favorite crystal
vase in a conclusive
crashing blow

Wake up and smell the coffee
whydoncha

Sometimes there just aren't
baby steps and stages
ruses or transitions
between one and the Other

Sometimes it's just
right and real and raw
and no matter how you hack it
it's the unexpected
that arrives with the
least warning and most
brutal force

Nothing will ever be
the same.
