Existence in a Single Verse

by Alex Chambers

Condensed to a single verse,
one moment outshines all others in its implication.
There are many corridors to wander inside a misused heart,
proudly locked doors aligning each mirrored junction
mocking with the same half hearted rage as a sandlot bully.
Your rhetoric is as undisruptive as a sheaved sword
and I don't want you in my mind.

Contentment will always sever,
intelligence will always alienate.
Actions over analyzed and choreographed
until each day becomes
just another scene playing out from an old.
monochromatic TV in a dusty shop window.
A mellow drama to be syndicated and packaged
into pleasing little multi-colored boxes.

For a moment all that I knew had glittered.
Kisses with the promise of a million more,
intimacy proceeding the downfall.
Your promises, wrecked and brushed aside by sullen language,
leaves me muted and ineffective like an idle pen.

I condense my history,
each whispered line outshining the first,
each precious word forgotten once spoken.
