Oak Leaf Mimicry

by Tony Whitaker

Looking at the back
of a green oak leaf
I smile at the striking similarity
like looking down from 30,000 feet
flying high over summer summits of
Appalachian mounts

The large straight veins
mimic high ridges
of these ancient alps
with its thinner vessels like
valleys cut by streams
becoming rivers
down through the foothills
then to the sea

Excellent and unusual view! Most people forget to look at the back of the leaf. (Now I will try a 'Don Campbell' on you --he suggested this kind of thing with my 'Full House'--try reading this poem backwards in couplets bottom to top! Very effective (and suspenseful)that way too!
