What Love Isn't

by Alisa Js

What kind of love only mimics words spoken
What kind of love is silent?
Leaving questions unanswered
For days and times uncertain,
This kind of love, I do not know Â…

Love doesnÂ’t play games
Love doesnÂ’t hide
Beneath a cloak of silence
Or masterful lies,
Love doesnÂ’t hang in the distance
Watching and waiting
Anticipating,
Love doesnÂ’t travel those roads Â…

Love is only happy with the truth of the light
And seeks to comfort and hold
Those dear to oneÂ’s soul,
Love is always giving
Without expectations or the need to control

Love doesnÂ’t inflict pain on itÂ’s intended
Strangle hellos and smother good-byes
Love doesnÂ’t leave things hanging,
On a very thin rope
In the midst of a storm
Or turn aside in the rain
Falling from anotherÂ’s wounded heart
And pretend
All is all right, while looking in the other direction
Love doesnÂ’t operate that way
Love doesnÂ’t play with the dark Â…

Author's Note: I am starting to believe far too many people toss the word, 'love' around without fully understanding or realizing what 'love' really is. Love is more than a feeling. Love is a decision of the will. Love is. This poem was inspired by my personal experience in past failed relationships. I am so very blessed to know a deeper, stronger love now in my life with someone who understands the true meaning of the word, 'love'...*sigh*

Love comes in many forms. I don't exactly remember how many kinds of defined loves there are. Your words certainly point out what love shouldn't be. And yes, certainly many people don't strive to be faithful in love, just abusing it or playing games. Interludes with false and abusive love can leave one jaded, yet to not risk being loved can be just as painful. I like the words you've written here. They appear to be based on experience. After several things happened in my life, I was so afraid to love or let anyone love me (even my close friends). Yet, I found that with time, and God's healing, I was able to open my heart again and risk. I hope you are comforted and healed from whatever pain you feel now.

...alisaJs, good 'un...so much easier to "toss" love around like a volley ball, when it's much like a butterfly, you chase and chase and chase ad infinitum, then if you'll just sit soon it will light on your shoulder...i like your defining what Love isn't...Christ said of all the commandments love is the most important and it's tough to locate it's so deep inside us...i love this...peace, chaz

I agree. Far too many use the word love like they use an article. Except for my family, which is a different kind of love, I have told very few women "I love you" for that is a commitment to me that stands the test of time, and sometimes reason. And I never fall out of love with these few, even my ex-wife. There will always be that "thing" so many have tried to quantify, qualify or simply dignify with words that can never fully explain this thing called love.

Alisa, high honors to you for this sincere and well written poem. I've not had much time lately to be on site, so I'm glad I came by and glad I saw this poem on the front page. I find it so genuine and moving.

I also like reading the comments, and feeling the same way as others.

So many fine poems are blooming in Pathetic this Fall, so many fine poets, and I'm glad you're among us. ;) —Jill
