No Regrets Were Formed In The Making Of This Sonnet

by Quinlan L Gibson

Two lives I have of mother and lover
overpower who I once was.
First one and then the other
my singularity on pause.
Rich happiness does gild them both,
yet I wonder where I’ve gone.
Committed, undying most sacred oath,
my being is withdrawn.
Mother by nature; lover by choice.
The pieces fit snug and tight.
I kiss my son; I kiss my love
and adore them with all that is right.
Still I wonder where I am; what I would have become,
before I was devoured by a lover and a son.

Author's Note: Project in Lit. Study class: I chose the option of modernizing one of the poems we studied (there were 6). I chose Shakespeare's Sonnet 144, and this is what came out. Shakespeare; Sonnet 144 http://www.shakespeare-online.com/sonnets/144.html
