in reflection

by Elizabeth Hoadley

i see you
give an action
take direction
without a fraction
of doubt
sanguine confidence
breathes radiance
in a precarious
crowd

your light distorted
by masses retorting
in their self pity
and glower

their differences
are similarities
from which
you're empowered

both
you and them have
surplusing judicious
unlocking the mysterious
endeavors of one's
longing past
and
since then
have been
searching
for something
that could
inevitably last

their binding
differences
leaves them
to eternity
oh
they'd be
freed
if only, if only
they could see
the intensity
in pundency
that flowers
in your eyes;
they'd might
believe
that
i see me
when not lost
to misery
and lies

an
emulated image
of oneself
haunting,
daunting,
longing,
on a dusty
top shelf

i see all
of me
dancing
hopefully
in reflection
and because
i can't pass
t h r o u g h
this mirror,
'tis a burden
and my only
objection

Author's Note: I wrote this in response to controversey over a new band director. So many looked at only the differences that seperated her from the group and the community was almost lost. Seeing this happen I learned a most valuable lesson: As much as we are different, we are the same.

Well said, right up to the end.
