forever lost

by Charlie Morgan

a summer day rides an autumn wind;
shrouded in light rain, heat.
jangled feelings arrive lonely,
unannounced, looking for the host.

nibbles at my ankles, hungry
for all my being, hand-me down youth
spent! no change coming,
a currency of wrinkles: no valuation.

full days, Chief Joseph fighting
"no more, forever," saving his people.
me, first: one, five, thiry-five;
now sixty going on twelve, then zero.

mirrors reflect an image of a stranger;
a man not known in these parts.
another being in another skin;
folded, wrapped resembling a mummy.
