The boy who grew up inside me

by Sigurdur Haraldsson

The boy who grew up inside me
wanting to be a cowboy
lassoed his dreams
and is currently
fighting Indians.

The boy who grew up inside me
wanting to be an astronaut
blasted into space
following his fantasies
among the galaxies.

The boy who grew up inside me
wanting to be a firefighter
blazed through countless fires
to save lives
other than my own.

The boy who grew up inside me
wanting to be a superhero
saves the world
every single day
- sometimes more.

I never knew them
except fleetingly
which is a shame.
I believe we all
could have been
such good friends.

Author's Note: I overheard somebody talk about the "girl who grew up wanting to be a dancer" which sparked this.
