The Distance

by Jeffrey Parren

the distance of the future
doomed a careful existence
protecting himself and building up
a wall of constant busy-ness
so that his mind would forget
the loneliness he endured
and the loss of his mother

the distance of hoped dreams
would always elude him
though keep him busy they would
and the circularity would not break
so that he mindlessly could exist
ingenious was the design
but life could always ruin man's plans

the distance of ultimate realization
creeps closer until sulken mentalities
give way finally under burdens
that the columns of the past
cannot support the building up
until eventually all is lost
and he closes his eyes one last time
