As Thoughts of You Take Residence

by Ken Harnisch

As thoughts of you take residence in my mind
Again, I begin to wonder why
While climbing the stairs to
Clean your room
And dust the pictures
And make sure the place is as cozy
Warm as when you left it
All those years ago.

Nothing is out of place
And when you return
You will find the pillow fluffed
And the coffee hot
And the conversation just as good as it’s ever been

If you can stand the wild beating in my heart
When you cross the threshold
If you even know it’s there
If you remember why
I think I may even hold you closely
Through the night
If you don’t mind.

this is lovely. and touches me deeply as i stand at the thresholds of my kids' rooms and check that all is neat and ready for their return.

I love the last three lines. It almost feels like a weird performance-based thing. Really cool.
