ground once lost

by Peter Humphreys

they say
that Nature
subsumes
unto itself
ground once lost
to humans
and
as I sit
upon
this old and crumbly seat
I see around me
feel
and smell
the fecund call
the sensuous pall
of fuschia
honeysuckle
bell
nettle nest
where paths
are greening
grow
and
old roses
once a pride
of show
revert
reclaim
their nature
broken
in a thicket stand
I stare
and
watch
Man's
vain reprise
the call
against
His nature
