You Can't Hear Me

by Jeffrey Parren

It's that powerless feeling -
the one they say is so great
about being with the one you love
but mine is the one that leaves
me crying on my bed alone,
because you left
after making me cry
drowning out my words
with "Don't talk to me," or
"Don't do this right now."

I just told you it was my fault -
I was trying to create
the perfect evening because
I don't see you for a few days
and you can't find the courage
to hear me out, instead you dash
out the door, leaving me here,
to my keys and my thoughts.
I love you with every figment
of my being, I just wish you
could too, or act like it,
because the constant barrage
of questions I endure
that you used to ask the ones
who hurt you are hurting me
and I tell you, but continue on you do
and I understand self-preservation
but never will I hurt you,
but you can't hear me anyway.

sometimes it's better to just stand quiet in her storm and listen.
