charming and charismatic
he enchanted everyone
within earshot
regaling us all
with amusing tales
of his misadventures

he turned his
brilliant smile to me
and i saw
without a doubt
he had no soul
behind his eyes

my food turned to sand
in my mouth
heavy, tasteless
impossible to swallow
as my family gazed at him
in rapt adoration
