There Was An Ideal

by Genevieve Sturrock

born in my innocent mind
out of faith in fairy tales
i was a princess
fair of face, full of grace
there was a prince
out there, somewhere
just waiting to find me

i knew i would have to endure
some truly terrible circumstance
in order to come
to the attention
of that brave knight
and i awaited my trevail without fear

every young man
who came to my door
was met with charm and warmth
for you never knew which
frogling might hide
a prince's heart

i didn't have a preconceived notion
of what my prince charming
might be like
just the faith that
he would come in search of me

and so i went along
with the good
the bad
and even the ugly
with an open mind and willing heart

what a fool i was
to think that young men
might harbor the belief
that they were young princes
who needed to seek out their beloved

but there was an ideal

Author's Note: TAG...okay, it's a little pathetic, but what can i say?
