The Crossing by Don Matley
She is nearly out of my vision now
The far shore awaits her delicate feet
Out of sight, yet so clear in my mind
Never blurred
The river was nearly crossed for her
But now it watermarks a page in her life
Separates her who was to be mine
The current is strong in the river
It would suck you down as it did her
Drained her lifeblod,sapped her strength
She fought and fought
But she was too weak to cross the river
I am much weaker now,yet I am still stronger
Stronger, than she ever was
I only hurt, she is destroyed
Crushed as a rose petal against the rocks
I cannot leave my people and cross yet
I will retrace her steps one day and and tread the river waters
I will greet her on the other side and welcome her home.
It is not a sin to do what you think is right and to find you were wrong
I love the river, for now it is her
If it ever were to dry up, so would my life
If its current ever runs still, I would go mad
I surely would go mad.

The images-- the "rose petal crushed" are memorable. I love the philosophical musings, the intimate, ultimate statements, the really good ending, and especially "I love the river, for now it is her". |
