We Can All Shine

by Maria Terezia Ferencz

once I had a parallel ear and I could understand
now I can't hear you above the rest
I have risen above
all sounds you make are lost to the dim
drowned in a sea of cacophany
your tongue forked as flatware
scraping and screaming about
how one side is shinier than the rest
not true
I say
we can all shine
if rubbed the right way
