fire island midnight beer

by Lauren Singer

i only had one drink
but i swear that in
the crook of your elbow,
sweating by the fire as the water
lapped up the rest of our feet
and you covered my shoulders with
your hooded sweatshirt,
that maybe it would be alright
to rest my head against you
and give it up there on the shore
looking towards fair harbor
as fire island slept away its drunken shudders.

I like it...even though the waters that lapped your feet were those of the Atlantic..not Long Island Sound..but who's quibbling?

All things combined I don't think it was the beer but the water lapping and the firelight and the moment and ah yes the poetry of it all, excellent. smh
