Just Yesterday by Darren Swift
Just yesterday I made his food,
we ate together until he bit down
and his grin changed as he spat.
Just yesterday I held his tooth,
pearlescent, pure, clean;
a first shedding of infancy.
Just yesterday I held his hand,
told him of the lands far away
that he could visit while he slept.
Just yesterday I stroked his hair,
helped him slip into that special sleep
through which his smile would twitch.
Just this morning I carried him,
still and silent save for febrile moans
sending hot fetid breath to my face.
Just this morning they took him,
pierced him, tubed him, cooled him,
helpless he faded into sepia tones.
Just this moment he flickered then
spasmed; blinded, muted he fails.
I watch my flesh slip away.
Just this secondÂ…
There is nothing just about this second.
