I Can Still Hear Your Voice

by Jeffrey Parren

I can still hear your voice,
even though you have been gone
for almost three years now.

When you called down to me
in my dungeon of a room
to get you something or to talk.

I enjoyed our conversations
and you finding out about your son
meant the world to you.

If I had found that out sooner
or maybe appreciated it more
I would have been more open.

The things that I thought may
disappoint you I usually spared;
not liking myself was enough.

I can still hear your voice
cheering me on at sports
or at my writing.

You always were a fair judge
and you never spared the good
or the bad, opinion was needed.

And I know you counted on me
for my opinion, and to this day
I appreciate your confidence in me.

For the days when I didn't have it,
you kept the ideas flowing and
the words kept coming.

To inspire, to nurture, to hold,
you always knew what I needed...
I can still hear your voice.

This is pretty close to how I feel about my own mom. I don't think I make that clear nearly often enough.
