Escarpment of love

by Oliver Drewman

There are few words to express
The joy of your company
And your companionship
Your leaving deafens all applause
Gives breath of endless silence
This busy world a single pause

To look around quietly
Ask-
What does this one so love?
That loved is he
Too much to flee
The presence of friends by choice
Like the loss the shore feels for the sea
The lakes for the geese in the winter
The trees for the leaves falling free
So let this time of weaping build upon
An escarpment of Christ's love
Our love for one another
