Watch The Skies!

by Danny Washington

Watch the skies!
Though nothing will come.
No alien or insurgent,
or weapon of war.
You won’t see a message
up amongst the clouds.
You won’t hear the screaming
that follows the calm.

Watch the skies!
Now you hear the sound
of aeroplane engines,
or a squawking bird.
You’ll all huddle together,
and feel each others fear,
as all the laugher’s interrupted,
by something overhead.

Watch the skies!
The sound grows nearer
and the fear grows stronger.
You cover your ears,
and see pictures of burnt flesh,
as the sound penetrates your brain.
Your saw it on the news
but now it feels so real.

Watch the skies!
So many will lose their lives,
as the enemy brings terror
and showers down their beliefs.
It wasn’t us that opposed,
and destroyed their children’s homes.
We are innocent!
We are the victims!

A Boeing 747 passes,
so we unclench our fists
and stop gritting our teeth.
We’re safe again, to go inside.
Our paranoia has cleared,
and anyway, they’re the victims,
and we are to be feared.

Watch the skies,
because one day
they might fight back,
and show you real pain.
